ABSTRACT
The article discusses the developments in China's forest cover between 1949 to 2003 and the effects of afforestation, deforestation and reforestation on the action. It has been that forests have an important role in the global terrestrial ecosystems such as temporary carbon sink in the global carbon cycle, preservation of biodiversity and conservation of soil and water resources. With this, it is equally necessary to study the level of areas covered by forests to fully understand the role of terrestrial ecosystems. The afforested areas are lesser compared to the new plantation forests while timber harvesting has been the major way of deforestation in the country.
