The Value of Spam

Hamilton, Tyler

Technology Review;Nov2006, Vol. 109 Issue 5, p21
The article focuses on an analysis of the advantages of stock-touting spam on the Internet. Seventy-five thousand spam stock touts received by an email account and a Usenet newgroup between January 2004 and July 2005 were examined. The results showed increases in trading volume after sending out stock-touting spam. A spammer can earn profits averaging 4.9% if he buys a stock a day before touting then sells it the next day. A countermeasure is recommended, which involves brokerage houses imposing waiting periods between trades on first-time penny-stock investors.
