This article focuses on why black artists did not appear on Music TeleVision (MTV) in its early days. Rick James fought the cable network to have his "Super Freak" video and others by black artists shown. Michael Jackson's videos helped break down the barriers to blacks on MTV. Former MTV officials are interviewed.
