ABSTRACT
The article reports on the decline in Europe's carbon dioxide permit prices in May 2006. Carbon dioxide permit prices under the European Union's (EU) cap-and-trade Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) plummeted more than 60%. Belgium, France, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Sweden release data that showed companies in chose countries generated less than their maximum allowance of carbon dioxide emissions in 2005. Analysts say they expect further price volatility in the emissions market in the short term, because all EU member states were due to publish data on their 2005 trading performance under the ETS by May 15, 2006.
