The Use of Modern Fiction in the High School Course in Literature

The article focuses on the inclusion of modern fiction in the teaching of literature in high school. Fiction has a strong appeal to most high school students, considered the strongest justification of reading-as-literature in school or in life. The benefits of reading contemporary fiction in the high school class include the appreciation of what is good, sincere and fine in books and the opportunity for boys and girls to discriminate and evaluate, giving them a training in taste. The distinct kinds of fiction for high school students are the classics and the modern stories. The qualities for the best modern fiction of high school classes are discussed.
