ABSTRACT
This article investigates the secret gay life of legendary rhythm & blues singer Luther Vandross. When Vandross died in July 2005, the media turned up the volume on the sexuality of the artist. Vandross remained defensive, and he often became combative and short-tempered on the many occasions when interviewers directly confronted him about his love life. But writer, actor, and raconteur Bruce Vilanch, who met Vandross relatively early in his career, says the singer had opened up to him when they worked together.
