ABSTRACT
The article reports that Japan's six largest television stations are banding together to put a halt to the sale of pirated copies of their programs via online auction sites. The recording of popular shows from the five commercial stations and NHK, Japan's national broadcaster, has mushroomed into a thriving cottage business since DVD players became commonplace in the home and the Internet made it easy to sell the illegal television recordings. The companies plan to set up a watchdog organization that will monitor the sale of copied TV programs over the Internet, an NHK official confirmed on Monday.
