Teacher Authority Over the Curriculum?

The article focuses on the debate surrounding the extent of authority that public teachers should have in curriculum development in the United States. According to the author, just as the public school teacher has begun the quest for greater authority, the age of consultation has begun. The trend produces hazards for the teacher and also offers opportunities for a wider role. The author made suggestions as to how authority over curriculum development eventually could be shared with a minimum of serious conflict. The author also predicted that the teacher will share authority with other professionals in the future, just as other professionals may share their authority with the teacher.
