ABSTRACT
The article discusses the teaching of the Italian literature and language. The bulk of Italian literary works before the beginning of the twentieth century has such a pedantic or aristocratic tone that the ordinary high-school student would either be completely bored or non-plussed. Also, the masterpieces in Italian literature are mainly in verse, those in prose being of a nature such as to forbid their use for reasons of morality. However, though the text-book material available for the teaching of Italian in high schools is not so abundant nor varied as for French, Spanish and German, it is rapidly increasing in merit and is adequate for planning a four-year high school reading course.
