Another Approach to Higher Education

The article presents information on the need for radical rearrangement of the higher education system in the U.S. Many educators acknowledge that it does not make sense to have students concentrate their education in a nonstop, 16-year dose and then swear off for the rest of their lives. Nor does it make sense to restrict them to learning entirely from experience with one social institution. In some places, practices have already been instituted for spreading postsecondary education over a number of years and interlacing it with other activities. In the author's judgment, the past slow growth of work-study programs will accelerate considerably. Even more popular than alternate terms of work and study, however, will be a pattern in which a student spends one year on the campus, followed by part-time work and part-time course work, or further education through individual effort without campus involvement. Another important curriculum element would deal with models of social organization of the future. Universities, as a natural consequence of their researches, are primary inventors of such models, and it is the campuses that transmit the models to the next generation.
