ABSTRACT
This article highlights the message presented by Peter Coates, chief executive officer of Xtrata Coal, during the Coaltrans Conference in Brisbane, Queensland during September 2005. Coates told the 300 Australian and international delegates that excessive current and planned expenditure on port infrastructure by the Australian coal industry, was a form of irrational exuberance. Coates, who is also chairman of the Australian Mineral Council, further suggested that unless some of the more strident demands for export infrastructure investment were tempered, there was a danger of wasting billions of dollars on superfluous facilities.
