ABSTRACT
Considers the conflict in education between the intelligent design explanation for life and evolution. Suggestion that the core issue is the status of science teaching, and that the rhetoric surrounding the debate is serving to bury this core issue; The author's belief that science education in the United States is likely to become the laughingstock of the world; Statement that the demeaning of scientific inquiry comes at a crucial time for the economy and the capacity of the U.S. to maintain its technological edge; Reference to the unresolved issue in science leadership about the way talented, well-educated women are treated in the academe; Evidence that the quality of high school science laboratory experiences is poor; Suggestion that teachers need more substantive professional development.
