ABSTRACT
This article deals with the collaboration of the Food and Nutrition Section and Affiliates of the American Public Health Association in June 2005. As overweight and obesity in the U.S. can be addressed more effectively at local levels, the topic lends itself well to an Affiliate/Section partnership, according to Patricia Risica, Food and Nutrition Section councilor and immediate past-president of the Rhode Island Public Health Association. To build advocacy partnerships, the Section has sought and is still seeking liaisons on health weight issues on the 53 state and local Affiliates of the association. Thus, to help move along the project, the Section will be sending a survey to Affiliate liaisons or to Affiliate presidents for those that do not yet have a liaison with questions about education and advocacy needs. In the survey, the Section asks what kind of resources, ranging from model legislation to fact sheets to guest speakers. Hence, Affiliates need to address local nutrition topics and what kind of advocacy the Affiliate is already conducting. As well, according to Risica, the survey will not only inform the Section, but also help Affiliates to get to know their activities.
