ABSTRACT
The article discusses the Australian policy context that indicates the emergency of relationship violence as a topical issue, and reasons to expect a hostile reaction whenever violence in relationships, particularly sexual violence, makes its way onto the public agenda. The article also revisits United States' date rape debate of the late 1980s and early 1990s, and evaluates the aggressive response that emerged in the country against research indicating higher rates of rape in dating relationships than the media and general public were willing or able to accept. Particularly, a detail critique is offered of the inaccuracies and flaws that suffuse the book of the date rape backlash, Katie Roiphe's "The Morning After: Sex, Fear and Feminism.
