ABSTRACT
The article focuses on Belarusian Americans dilemma in the context of American multiculturalism. Belarusian Americans are a colorful, active, and productive ethnic group, with multiple achievements in various fields of endeavor. There is a vast literature in a number of languages covering this ethnic group and its land of origin. Researching Belarusian Americans, however, has proven a difficult task, and the dilemmas raised mirror those facing researchers of other small ethnic groups in the U.S. With increasing awareness of multiculturalism and its surrounding issues, researchers and practitioners can no longer be content with considering distinct ethnic groups in terms of their broad categories alone. Terminology poses a challenge for researchers. Another challenge is that of demographics. Only recently has the U.S. census begun to keep count of Belarusian Americans and other distinct national groups who had previously been classified as part of broader ethnic categories. Ethnic organizations often have a better awareness of the state of the group than do outsiders, but at the same time, those organizations have many incentives to exaggerate their group's presence.
