ABSTRACT
This article reports on the preliminary plans for the 1971 summer conference of the Speech Communication Association (SCA) in the U.S. The SCA Educational Policies Board announced at the New Orleans, Louisiana convention that second vice-president Robert C. Jeffrey will serve as director of the 1971 SCA Summer Conference. The conference, to be held in Chicago, Illinois, will begin on Thursday evening, July 8 and end following lunch on Saturday July 10. Unlike its predecessors, the 7th annual SCA summer meeting will offer short courses which, according to Jeffrey, will be designed to provide instruction in basic areas of recent research and innovative practice in the field of human communication that will assist elementary, secondary and college teachers to enrich content and procedure in their own teaching. Preliminary plans call for a series of short courses representing at least six substantive areas. Participants will be able to select either a sequence of three half-day courses, or a single course extending throughout the day-and-one half conference. The course topics will be sufficiently narrow that matters of specific content can be covered. Tentative short course titles that have been suggested include the following: Uses of Basic Communication Models; Feedback Theory and the Basic Course; Issues in Freedom of Speech for the Classroom Teacher; Applications of Multivariate Statistics; Developing Behavioral Objectives; Non-verbal Communication; and Implications of the National Developmental Project on Rhetoric for the Teaching of Speech Communication.
