ABSTRACT
This section presents an update on projects of the Speech Communication Association (SCA) and other national organizations, and resources on the communication discipline as of December 1977. Minimal Competencies Project is an initial report on current state adopted competencies and recommended competencies in speaking and listening has been completed by an SCA task force. Under the direction of Ron Bassett at the University of Texas at Austin, the task force surveyed 50 state departments of education and over 150 documents from computerized searches. SCA is sponsoring a program at the annual convention of the National Council of Teachers of English in New York, on November 25, 1978 entitled Forward to the Basics: The SCA Recommendations for Minimal Competencies in Speaking and Listening. The program will be chaired by Barbara Lieb-Brilhart. Presenters and discussion leaders are Ron Bassett and Donna Townsend who will report the SCA proposed minimal competencies in speaking and listening. The National Science Foundation is in the process of reorganizing its Research Applied to National Needs Division. While it is yet to be formally announced, the new division will be called the Science Engineering Applications Directorate. It will have four Divisions: Problem Oriented Basic Research; Applied Research; Problem-Focused Research Applications; and Intergovernmental Science and Public Technology.
