ABSTRACT
The article focuses on plans to dispose of nuclear waster on Yucca Mountain in Nevada. One (very small) upside to John Kerry's defeat was its beneficial implications for the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. Kerry's pandering was politically smart but substantively indefensible, as Yucca is the best solution we now have for America's nuclear waste crisis. (If we don't store waste at Yucca, it will pile up in unsafe conditions at nuclear power plants near heavily populated areas.) Tom Daschle's defeat has led Nevada's Harry Reid to replace him as Senate minority leader. Reid has made clear he will use every tool in his powerful new arsenal to derail the project before waste begins to arrive there, sometime around 2010. We wish Reid the best in his upcoming battles against President Bush's second-term agenda. But, now that he's a Senate leader, it would be nice if he could stop placing his parochial obsession ahead of the national interest.
