ABSTRACT
We investigate a stable semiconductor fiber-ring laser (SFRL) whose output power can be controlled by external light injection. Based on this SFRL, we develop a novel laser for keeping its output power approximately constant when the input power is changed over a dynamic range of 17 dB. Potential applications are discussed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 43: 532–535, 2004; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com). The lasing performance of a Ho:YAG thin-disc laser pumped by a diode-pumped 1.9 μm thulium laser was examined. A cw output power of 9.4 W was obtained, corresponding to a slope efficiency with respect to incident pump power of 40% and an optical-to-optical efficiency of 36%.
