ABSTRACT
Suggests that the uncertainty as to the position of immigrants and refugees in the United States, the seemingly contradictory impulses of both xenophobia and xenophilia, is productive of disciplinary strategies in the U.S. that help to secure the official, state-based public sphere. Contrast of the treatment of refugees and immigrants in the U.S. after 9/11 with last Muslim mass-immigration of the 20th century.
