ABSTRACT
A sense of humour counts as a virtue in our society. It is often a desirable leadership quality. Displaying a sense of humour in the classroom sends a signal to students that having a sense of humour is important. If teachers can teach a student to have a sense of humour about the very serious things in life, they are teaching much more than facts and figures. The purpose of this study is to use Humour as a powerful teaching tool to impart knowledge to the students. Humour, provided it is not used in excess, can increase attention and interest and help to illustrate and reinforce what is being taught. The use of humour in Foreign Language Teaching and Learning is still more or less an unexplored territory. As an effective factor, the use of humour can greatly affect both the classroom atmosphere and student motivation. Research has shown that humour has the ability to influence creative thinking in the students. It has been noticed that in college classrooms, language teachers are using humour more often than other teachers. Teachers use funny stories related to the topic to improve students' overall attitudes. This paper tries to explain the effective use of humour in classroom teaching.
