Fractures of the tibia or radius in horses are often associated with kick injuries. In a retrospective study, cases of tibial or radial fractures presented to the Large animal clinic for surgery (since 2017 Clinic for horses) of the University of Leipzig between 2016 and 2018 were reviewed. Cases were considered when the diagnosis was stated delayed due to a previous misdiagnosis. The inclusion criteria were met by six horses of which three were mares and three geldings. Four horses belonged to the breed Deutsches Sportpferd, one was a pony, another one a trotter. The mean age was 12 years (5–21 years), the mean duration until referral was 11.5 days (4–19 days). The most often suspected diagnosis was cellulitis. Three horses suffered from a radial fracture and one from a radial fissure. The tibia was affected in two horses by a fissure and fracture once each. All animals presenting with a complete fracture were euthanized. Both horses showing an incomplete fracture survived. The cases were discussed with regard to the current case law.
