ABSTRACT
The article presents an argument that immigrants must recognize the need for them to assimilate into the U.S. culture. It notes that immigrants should have a functional knowledge of English and they should appreciate the history and political system of the country. It asserts that assimilation aims to instill to immigrants an appreciation of the shared U.S. values, without destroying the native cultures of immigrants.
