ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is to provide a chronological perspective on the accession process of the European Union states, a lengthy process, from which there resulted the birth of a diverse and united community, led by common values and principles. While the founding fathers' wish is attained, about greater openness to countries in Europe, there is a resounding question, which I tried to answer: what does it mean for Turkey to join the EU, considering the danger of a conflict of interest regarding the religions of both parties.Likewise, I tried to emphasise the importance ofassuming the essential values on which the EU was built, and which have ensured its continuity and the role of key player on the international relations arena.
