'End of brochures will mean death of agents'

Speaking at a Chartered Institute of Marketing Travel Industry Group debate — Brochures versus Electronic Distribution — Sunvil Holidays managing director Noel Josephides said he expected brochures to remain "until we run out of trees". "The disappearance of brochures would mean the disappearance of the travel agent," he claimed. Josephides said operators did not have the money to take on the Internet players, while getting rid of brochures meant the end of business for agents. Josephides said the operator — currently celebrating its 30th year in business — publishes 330,000 brochures covering its eight programmes. It pays out almost £380,000 annually in brochure costs, out of a £22 million turnover, and £132,000 on postage. The total cost represents around £15 per passenger. Sunvil carries 35,000 customers per year.
