Do as I say

Daily Mail;2/10/2016, p50
WHEN someone makes a statement and you wonder why, you ask them: 'Hey, what makes you think that?' If they reply, 'I just do', you say: 'Yeah, I know, but can you tell me why?' They then get all defensive and say: 'I'm entitled to my opinion.' You say: 'Yes, you are. But I don't have to just accept it, so I'm asking why you think that.' Then someone else pipes up and says: 'They're entitled to their opinion; they don't have to justify it to you. Don't be a bully.' What? Have we got to a point where if you ask someone why they think a certain thing or why they have a differing point of view that you would like to understand, you risk being branded a bully? Can people no longer partake in conversation, least of all debate? Is that no longer allowed? Is it simply a matter of 'because I said so' or 'because I do' and that's the end of the discussion?
