ABSTRACT
Thrift company, Lake Success, New York, Astoria Financial Corp.'s shares rose 1.29% Friday in a falling market, as most investors focused on its promise that earnings will improve next year, when rising interest rates will provide relief from its current pains. Per-share earnings of 53 cents missed analysts' consensus by 6 cents. But George L. Engelke Jr., Astoria's chairman, president, and chief executive officer, offered hope for next year when he told investors on a conference call Friday that earnings should be flat this quarter but then "increase robustly."
