The article presents a study comparing the academic outcomes between children with orofacial cleft (OFC) and children without major birth defects. The study involved a random sample of mothers of children aged 5-12 years with isolated OFC identified by the North Carolina Birth Defects Monitoring Program (NCBDMP) and unaffected children. It finds that most children with OFC are successful in school but may be more likely to have poorer academic outcomes than their peers without birth defects.
