ABSTRACT
This article presents the historical evolution of large scale social networking sites, since their origin in on-line communities until its consolidation into world-wide giants valued at several billion dollars. Particular emphasis is given to three of these large scale social networking sites: Friendster, MySpace and Facebook. The phenomenon of the expansion of social networking sites and the phenomenon of niche social networking sites are analyzed. Finally, a reflection is proposed on whether the genesis and rise of Facebook as a dominant social networking site marks the end of the era of large scale social networking sites, towards a more fragmented reality, where niche social networks take advantage of synergies between their users.
